ABC Ulwazi: What We Do

ABC Ulwazi was established in 1994. Since then it has developed into the pre-eminent Southern African NGO (non governmental organization or charitable organization) involved in the creation of a viable community radio sector.

ABC Ulwazi has obtained considerable funding in the last decade to provide bursaries for community radio broadcasters to attend training courses in its studios. Some 2 thousand broadcasters have benefited. A fully digital radio training studio (which can be adapted into a broadcast studio), two large lecture rooms and individual voice booths support the training programme.

ABC Ulwazi produces educational and developmental radio programmes in a variety of formats including documentaries, features and drama. It specializes in the technique of Entertainment Education (or educational "soap operas.") Every year it produces some 4000 hours of educational programmes in all 11 official languages of South Africa. Amongst its clients are government departments, various educational and developmental NGO's and Institutes and international donor agencies.

ABC Ulwazi has increasingly been fulfilling a consultancy role, with assistance in community radio start up and licence application for community radio stations as well as educational radio and edutainment radio guidance for organizations such as Soul City.

In addition to training, production and consultancy, ABC Ulwazi has an active research capacity. The following ABC Ulwazi publications are used widely as handbooks in Southern Africa:

Community Radio: The People's Voice. Edited by John van Zyl. Sharp Sharp Press. 2003

Innovative Radio. Inspiring Social Change. Edited by Venus Jennings. UNESCO. 2004.

A Sense of Belonging: Community Radio and Civil Society. John van Zyl. Sharp Sharp Press/ABC Ulwazi. 2005.
