ABC Ulwazi is a Section 21 non-governmental and non-profit organisation that functions as a radio training and production house.

Our Objectives are

• strengthening the community radio sector
• developing radio as a tool for development and education

What do we do

ABC Ulwazi’s activities include the following

• making educational and developmental programmes
• producing multilingual programmes in all formats
• training broadcasters
• Assisting communities to set-up their stations
• distributing and archiving educational programmes
• evaluating the use of the programmes
• Training and Capacity Development

Community Radio

ABC Ulwazi has been involved in the development of the sector since the beginning of the post-apartheid era.

We have a strong interactive working relationship with community stations across the country in all provinces and languages. This relationship is fostered by training, on-site visits, workshops and through involving the community radio station when developing and preparing programmes.

Training

We offer bursaries for annual training courses in 4 key topics: We are also accredited by Mappp-seta

• Presentation Techniques
• News and Actuality
• Sustainable Development Service

In addition, there are short content-based training courses, linked to specific programmes we have produced.

Production

ABC Ulwazi uses various radio formats when producing educational and developmental radio programmes.

These include documentaries, features, mini dramas and most successfully, the use of the educational "soap opera". We are currently working with John Ho

Consultancy

ABC Ulwazi is fulfilling a consultancy role throughout Africa. Projects include:

Assisting Soul City with their regional radio project Start-up community stations, starting with ALX FM in 1995 and, most recently, Orange Farm community radio.  As a strategic advisor in the facilitation on sustainable advocacy campaigns e.g. for the ministry of Health HIV/AIDS directorate.

Our Facilities

ABC Ulwazi is situated in Braamfontein, Johannesburg with a big training room, top range production facilities and four Soundscape editing suites. The facilities include a fully professional digital recording and mixing studio and one fully-equipped broadcast studio for training.
